Six weeks ago, Newcastle United Sporting Director Ross Wilson was talking about the contract situations with certain key players.

The recently installed Newcastle United Sporting Director admitted he was pleasantly surprised to discover the situation regarding Sandro Tonali, when he (Wilson) arrived from Nottingham Forest.

Ross Wilson having discovered on his arrival at St James’ Park, that rather than the Italy international having a contract that runs to the end of June 2028. The reality was that it effectively runs to the end of June 2030.

Sandro’s contract having secretly been extended to end of June 2029 AND an extra season on top of that which Newcastle United can choose to trigger, effectively meaning Tonali is contracted for another four and a half years as things currently stand.

When openly talking about Sandro Tonali in early December 2025 and his contract position, Ross Wilson also revealed that the club were in ongoing talks with two other key Newcastle United players and their representatives, to try and agree longer-term deals.

“It is no secret at all that we would want to extend Tino Livarmento’s contract and we would also want to extend Sven Botman’s contract too.

“These discussions are ongoing. Some discussions are more difficult than others but the desire would be to keep those players.

“Will they agree to these contracts? At the moment I think it is too early to say.”

When Ross Wilson was talking six weeks ago, Sven Botman had just over one and a half years left on his deal, whilst Tino Livramento just over two and a half years.

Six days ago on Monday 12 January, we saw Sven Botman agree a deal that moved his deal from ending on 30 June 2027, to 30 June 2030.

United Head Coach Eddie Howe declaring: “We are delighted that Sven has committed his long-term future to the club. He has been an outstanding player for us since he joined and I firmly believe there’s more to come from him. Sven has a strong mentality and work ethic, which is clear every time he trains or plays. We value his presence on and off the pitch and l’m really pleased to see his long-term future secured here.”

Now we are waiting on news of Tino Livramento.

Having helped secure Sven Botman to a far longer deal, it would be an even bigger positive if Ross Wilson can oversee the same with Tino Livramento.

Injuries and fitness issues have impacted on them, as well as form to an extent.

However, it remains the case that Newcastle United could have a high quality young defence, that would potentially be in place for years to come.

Lewis Hall is still only 21 and has a contract with three and a half years to run.

Malick Thiaw is 24 and his contract also has three and a half years to go.

Sven Botman 26 and now four and a half years remaining on his contract.

Whilst Tino Livramento is 23 and has two and a half years left to go currently.

Get another two or three years added to Tino’s contract and United well set with a back four that could do great things, fitness and form allowing…

This is how Newcastle United contracts currently look (via official club releases and media reports), when current deals are up:

End of June 2026:
