Premier League clubs lose £5billion and here is the breakdown club by club
An interesting new report has looked at how much each of the Premier League clubs have lost.
These are the total losses club by club, from when the English top tier was rebranded as the Premier League for the 1992/93 season.
Football Finance expert Kieran Maguire looking at all the Premier League clubs across the entire Premier League era so far.
Kieran Maguire explaining that the figures have been put together using the detailed pre tax losses from the accounts of each club, that are available up to this pint (20 January 2026).
Those losses for Premier League clubs totalling almost £5billion and sure to go ever higher as future accounts are released by the various clubs.
The football finance expert stating that ‘ten clubs are responsible for 90% of the [£4.99billion] losses.’
Premier League clubs losses 1992 onwards
As you can see, Chelsea by a huge distance producing the biggest losses of all Premier League clubs, over £1.25billion in the table above. The reality of course is that Chelsea’s real losses are far higher than this, as they have pulled every trick in the book to manipulate and lower the official losses, such as by selling themselves their own hotels and also doing the same with the women’s team.
Manchester City another one that is hugely under reported when it comes to official ‘losses’, as we are still awaiting the verdict (and punishment ‘if’ found guilty) on the 115 charges.
Both Chelsea and Manchester City also of course amongst the Premier League clubs whose owners also own totally, or in part, other clubs as well. Using the multi-ownership to give themselves further advantages when it comes to signing players and affecting the accounts.
Interesting to see Sunderland seventh highest with losses of £211million.
Whilst Newcastle United are down in eleventh with total losses of £148.1million across the Premier League era.
