Malick Thiaw makes public to German media why he signed for Newcastle United

Malick Thiaw is proving to be yet another brilliant Eddie Howe signing for Newcastle United.

I know we are biased but surely the Germany international is in the running to be the bargain of the summer 2025 transfer window.

Signed for an initial £30m from AC Milan, going up to a total of just less than £35m if future add-ons are triggered, Malick Thiaw showing already what an outstanding talent he is.

So good has his form for Newcastle United being, after an absence of more than two years from the Germany squad, Thiaw getting called up for these key November internationals. If Germany win against both Luxembourg and Slovakia they will be guaranteed a place at the 2026 World Cup finals.

The form of Malick Thiaw for Newcastle United has generated a lot of interest over in Germany, as he has more than earned this recall to the national squad.

Now the player has been interviewed by the media in Germany and asked why he made the summer transfer from AC Milan to Newcastle United.

Malick Thiaw asked whether he was impressed that, according to Sky Sports, manager Eddie Howe made three attempts to lure him to Newcastle United:

“Definitely.

“There was already a discussion in the spring but this summer it became much more concrete than in previous years.

“I also had talks with Eddie Howe, in which he explained his plans for me and where he saw me playing.

“Based on that, I decided on Newcastle United.

“I think it was the right decision.”

Malick Thiaw on having a song dedicated to him by Newcastle United fans:

“I know the lyrics, they are fantastic.

“It is a song I have never had before in my career. I was surprised when I first heard it.

“My teammates then told me – without downplaying it – that it’s common in England.

“Nevertheless, it was wonderful for me.

“I first heard the song at an away game when I was standing in front of the fans. I’ll never forget that moment.”

Malick Thiaw asked about Julian Nagelsmann’s plans for him:

“He called me when I moved to Newcastle United.

“We had a phone conversation and the initial expectation was that I would deliver in the games for Newcastle.

“I think I’ve managed that quite well lately.

“Since I’ve been here, we haven’t had a face-to-face conversation yet, but I’m sure that will happen in the next few days.”
