Miracle worker Eddie Howe has even achieved this with Newcastle United
Eddie Howe has transformed Newcastle United.
No cup final for 24 years? Two in three seasons and now only one step away from a third in four seasons.
No Champions League football for more than two decades? Two qualifications in three seasons for Eddie Howe.
No trophy in 56 years? Sorted with a dominant performance and win at Wembley over Liverpool, who were runaway Premier League winners.
Is there nothing that miracle man Eddie Howe isn’t capable of?
Apparently not.
In the past, if Newcastle United ended up in a penalty shootout, you took for granted what would happen next…
Under Eddie Howe though?
On the way to the 2023 Carabao Cup final, the 2022/23 season seeing Newcastle United win 3-2 on penalties against Crystal Palace.
The next season (2023/24) a bit of a setback, losing 4-2 in the Carabao Cup quarter-final shootout at Stamford Bridge.
However, that same season a 4-3 spot-kick triumph over Blackburn at Ewood Park in the FA Cup.
On the way to another Wembley final, Sean Longstaff scoring the final penalty as United won 4-3 on spot-kicks away at Forest in the Carabao Cup.
Now on Saturday, a remarkable match ending with a 7-6 penalty result against Bournemouth, Aaron Ramsdale with three huge saves.
In four seasons of managing Newcastle United, Eddie Howe with a superb four penalty shootout triumphs and only one setback.
It is almost as if Eddie Howe has helped give his players the mentality to see his team through these high pressure shootouts.
If you think four out of five is good, you must admit it is stellar where Newcastle United are concerned, considering their record in senior competitions (not ZDS or Texaco Cup etc) before Eddie Howe came along.
LOST 5-2 on penalties in 1969/70 away to Pecsi Dozsa (Fairs Cup)
LOST 7-6 in 1979/80 at home to Sunderland (League Cup)
LOST 4-3 in 1991/92 at home to Bournemouth (FA Cup)
LOST 4-2 in 1995/96 at home to Chelsea (FA Cup)

There you have it, before Eddie Howe came along, Newcastle United had lost ten of their twelve penalty shootouts in major competitions.
To make matters even worse, United had lost ALL eight shootouts at St James’ Park before Eddie Howe arrived!
