Club President admits his club are trying to sign young Newcastle United winger
The Club President of Cadiz, Manuel Vizcaino, has admitted that the Spanish club are trying to sign Antonito Cordero.
It was seen as an excellent deal when Newcastle United managed to sign the then 18 year old as a free agent, after the winger turned down a new contract at Malaga.
Seen as one of the best emerging young talents in Spain and attracting interest from many clubs, Antonito Cordero managed 13 direct goal involvements for Malaga in the 2024/25 season, scoring six and getting seven assists.
Newcastle United instantly loaned the young winger out to Belgian top tier club Westerlo for this 2025/26 season.
However, like so many other loan deals involving young Newcastle United players, it has proved a disaster.
As in so many other cases where young NUFC players go out on loan to get plenty of first team football but then don’t, Antonito Cordero hasn’t been allowed a single league start by Westerlo and instead only 87 minutes in seven brief appearances from the bench.
A lot of Newcastle fans pointing the finger at Shola Ameobi, who since 2019 has been the Loan Coordinator/Manager at NUFC, overseeing young players sent out on loan.
With all parties now seemingly accepting that Antonito Cordero should cut short his year long loan in Belgium, it appears he could be heading back to Spain shortly.
Estadio Deportivo reporting quotes from Manuel Vizcaino, the Cadiz Club President.
He has now admitted: “I can’t confirm that a deal is close, because he belongs to another club, but he is a player who is on the market and we are interested in him. However, deals can’t be announced until they are finalised.”
The reports from Spain make clear that this would be another purely loan deal to get the young NUFC player some regular first team football, with his long-term future still seen at St James’ Park. So no option to buy for Cadiz (or any other club), with United hoping that the teenager can in time progress towards a first team future at Newcastle.
Manuel Vizcaino is hopeful of his club signing the young winger but explains: “There are many parties involved and we are going to wait and see if he can ultimately join Cadiz. We are interested, but if it doesn’t happen, we will move on and look for other options.”
Cadiz are on a big push to try and make it into La Liga, currently sixth in the table and looking for extra quality that can help them secure that promotion to the Spanish top tier.
