Burnley 1 Newcastle 3 – 30 December 2025 7.30pm

Newcastle United fan/writer reaction from some of our regular contributors on The Mag.

Nat Seaton:

‘I will take the win even though we’ve played better and lost this season!

Three points on the road is always a great result but at times we made it hard for ourselves.

Had plenty of chances to have had the game won, but the finishing was poor at times, look away Jacob Murphy!

Travelling home happy for a change.’

Greg McPeake:

Jamie Smith:

‘Still some holes in the performance, it felt like a Burnley equaliser was nailed on for a while there, but a necessary away win to hopefully start to change the narrative.

Two really welcome returns to the team for Joelinton giving a classic performance and Nick Pope who made a few key saves that might have gone in during his absence.

Got to be happy with an away win ahead of a January spent predominantly at SJP.

Shape looks so much better with Wissa and the chance for this to gel in the weeks ahead.

A happy ending to a memorable year for NUFC.’

Matt Busby said to Joe Harvey…:

‘Oh Martin Dubravka!

After a blistering start, scoring twice in the opening seven minutes, we made heavy work of only our second PL win on the road this season.

After conceding, Wissa and Barnes missed gilt edged chances to restore our two goal advantage before the interval, which would have made the second half a little more bearable.

During a frantic 60 seconds on the hour mark, we rode our luck as Pope made two great saves before the scorer of their goal hit the bar.

Their MOTM was Marcus Edwards and he was also a constant threat before Dubravka’s howler that allowed Bruno to secure all three points in injury time.’

Tony Mallabar:

‘On the coach back home and what a relief.

Many folk who watch us will give a more tactical and a analytical summary of the game. But for me, watching Dubravka’s mistake for our 3rd goal reminded me of karma.

Cracking away ends tonight, a special mention to Bruno G.

Oh and by the way…the night’s award for clown of the year went to our favourite Mag quarter-wit, the Monk.’

GToon:

‘It’s all about the win.

As it happens, as a famous DJ used to say, that was pretty poor as far as victories go.

For long spells we were outplayed and tactically outthought (what is going on Eddie?) but managed not to concede.

Some of our players were amazing (Hall) but that ability didn’t extend any further down the left as Gordon was awful.

And what is up with Tonali? He’s miles off the pace. Still poorly?

Anyway. Three points.

Great to see crazy Joe back. He made a big difference tonight, as did Pope.’

David Punton:

‘A much-needed win but at times that was hard going against relegation fodder.

Only we could make being 0-2 ahead look tricky.

Eddie Howe got the result he needed tonight but I’m going to be harsh – we still need to be doing a lot better.

With the players that we have, we have to hold on to the ball better.

That said, it was job done tonight.’

Billy Miller:

‘I’m beginning to forget what a comfortable victory looks like.

Blasted our way to a two goal lead but allowed Burnley back into it and the second half was tough.

Credit to Burnley, they gave us a game, but it would have been nice to go three or four up and get the opportunity to blood some of the youngsters.

With all the debate around our keepers, it was our former goalie with a major gaff to confirm the win for us late on.

A relief to see Lewis Hall recover twice from injury. If he’s not already our best player he’s certainly the most consistent.’

Simon Ritter:

‘Points mean prizes.

Newcastle United have earned nowhere near enough on their travels this season but at Turf Moor they dominated the early stages and for the first time in the Premier League were 2-0 after six minutes.

Burnley, fighting against relegation, made the game a physical battle, aided by an overly lenient referee who continually waved away fouls if possession was retained, although there was often no advantage. Is this another PGMOL edict?

Nick Pope justified his recall with a couple of top-class saves, our international midfielders all had an impact and Bruno Guimaraes sealed victory with a sublime late finish.

Teams above us dropped points.

If you count a Champions League berth as a prize, as I do, we’re still in the hunt.’
