Instant Newcastle United fan/writer reaction after Newcastle 3 PSV 0
Newcastle 3 PSV 0 – Wednesday 21 January 2026 8pm
Instant fan/writer reaction from some of our regular contributors on The Mag.
Nat Seaton:
‘Another great European night at SJP, I’ll never just take these nights for granted.
Another three goals from our no 9, 10 and 11 and another European clean sheet.
Good performances all around, worrying about Bruno with the games we have coming up.
Bring on Aston Villa on Sunday on the back of the this great win!’
Billy Miller:
‘Can we play you every week?
PSV’s style of play was perfect for us and we forced multiple errors.
VAR did their best to spoil things early and credit to the referee who only needed one look to disregard their bizarre intervention.
Joelinton is looking back to his imperious best and it was refreshing to see all our starting front three getting the goals.
We go into the last game with our fate in our own hands. We owe PSG!’
GToon:
‘You are gonna have to go a long way down the pyramid to find a league they would be top of. I’ve never seen a team so frightened of us.
If you can rewatch the game, have a look at 34 mins when a ball is played in the air and Joelinton runs towards their player. He just heads it out and runs away. Hilarious!
As for us, I think we never hit the heights, but we didn’t have to.
Their team breathed a collective sigh of relief when Joelinton was subbed.
Wissa looked the part today. Gordon was on it and Hall was excellent again. Shame about Bruno but we have captain Miley to step in.
Also, a shame Eddie didn’t give one of the young lads a couple of minutes at the end when they didn’t even want to come into our half.
Successful passes was 78%. You can ask Botman about the other 22%.’
Matt Busby said…:
‘What a performance. What a result.
That’s two more games to add to our already demanding schedule. Whether it’s in the last 16 of the Champions League or not, depends on what we do in the Parc de Princes next week.
Then there’s the small matter of the League Cup Semi Final second leg to attend to.
What have I just written? What a time to be a fan of Newcastle United!
Lewis Hall outstanding. Wissa sharper than we’ve seen. Barnes will tear you apart, again.
A clean sheet for the back five. Elanga looking lively. Gordon with another goal on the big stage. Lewis Miley captain elect. The only downside was Bruno going off.
And what about VAR? Instead of “Go to the monitor and overturn your onfield decision, son”, it was a case of, “You might want to check your decision, lad” to which the ref’s answer was “Aye, I have done, and I’m not twisting”. Please take note Howard Webb!’
David Punton:
‘An excellent victory, paving the way for progress in the Champions League.
A nice distraction.
This was a much better team performance. We pressed PSV and they cracked.
Joelinton was excellent tonight and everyone seemed to have a better game.
You got a sense we had to win this one to ensure we’ve got a crack at getting into the next round.
PSV giftwrapped the first two goals – which were a nightmare from their point of view .
Harvey Barnes did brilliantly for the third and in defence Sven Botman looks back to his best.
The only negative tonight seems to be an apparent ankle injury for Bruno.’
Tony Mallabar:
‘My pre-match analysis normally consists of what time pint glasses get swapped over plakka ones in Bar Loco.
So today, finding out PSV had won 16 in a row domestically and have beaten Luckypool 4-1 and Napoli 6-2…
I was really disappointed with their timid performance.
Mind, saying that, 3-0 certainly didn’t flatter us with Joelinton having his best game of the season (in my opinion).
So it’s off to France next Tuesday with genuine hopes of a top 8 finish.
Hopefully Bruno’s injury isn’t too bad but Tonali looks knackered and maybe time to give young Mileycastle a go in his favoured midfield spot against Villa on Sunday.’
Mark Jankowski:
‘I was pretty confident heading into tonight and that confidence wasn’t misplaced.
PSV made things tricky with an aggressive press in the first half but despite that we went in 2-0 up.
PSV looked well beaten by the end of the second half and Newcastle go into the final match day in the top 8. T
he only black mark on the evening was a twisted ankle for Bruno.
Hopefully it’s nothing serious but we’ll worry about that tomorrow.’
