Bournemouth fans comments after seeing Newcastle United win FA Cup thriller
Bournemouth fans renewed acquaintances with Eddie Howe yet again.
A legend at the club, saving them from dropping into non-league and then taking them all the way through the divisions right up into the Premier League.
Saturday saw the two teams meet at St James’ Park.
Eddie Howe has experienced zero wins in seven Newcastle matches in the league against Bournemouth, although five of the seven have been draws.
Bournemouth fans though now seeing their team lose to Eddie’s NUFC for a second time in cup competitions, though fair to say this was a ‘little’ bit more dramatic than the December 2022 Carabao Cup 1-0 victory at SJP, when Newcastle took a step towards an eventual appearance at Wembley.
Interesting then to see what Bournemouth fans have had to say about what transpired in Saturday’s match, a full on game of drama that Newcastle United eventually edged.
It was also shootout revenge for United, 34 years since Bournemouth won on penalties at St James’ Park in the FA Cup in 1992.
Bournemouth fans commenting via their message board Up The Cherries…
‘Petrovic did well in the shootout, especially early on. The big miss was from Jiminez as it handed the sudden death initiative to them. Their penalties suddenly improved and we had to score every time – it was inevitable someone would miss under the pressure of 50000 Geordies booing them.’
‘I think Petrovic was very unlucky with the penalty. Even a home supporter who travelled on the train with us thought that the attacker had lost the ball and the decision was very soft.’
‘Pity it wasn’t shown live.’
‘I still had tnt sports following the Ashes, they had a “goals show” and jumped around all the grounds showing the action. Then they showed the penalty shoot out live.
Massive bias however with Kevin Nolan in the studio.’
‘We scored 3 away from home, really pushed a top team away from home, all the way in a very entertaining game. Despite being low on numbers.’
‘There’s an irony in the sales and enforced changes giving us a lineup for today that was getting towards the 4-4-1-1 formation preferred by EH when he was here.
The good news for us was that Newcastle have some huge fixtures coming up and injury problems in their squad. Plus, we all know EH’s MO in the FA Cup 3rd round so I had no doubt we’d see a selection of youth team players and squad outcasts starting for them. And we all know the complete lack of cohesion that leads to, followed by a swift exit.
About that…
Yeah, for possibly the first time in EH’s managerial career we didn’t see that. Sure, they made a bunch of changes. I think it shows is the difference in depth between us and the battle we face. Look at who started for them as rotation options.’
‘Unbelievably irritating way to lose.’
‘Disappointing result but another great game to watch.’
‘I imagine the players are shattered to have lost that. Physically but also mentally as they created more than enough to put it to bed and, put simply, Newcastle got lucky in injury time. And then took advantage of the shambling remains of our team near the end of extra time.
If George A Romero is looking for a plot for his next Living Dead movie, he’d do well to consider how, at that point, a team of shambling corpses somehow managed to come back and create another thrill.
Superb and tells you everything about these players and this manager.’
‘Players did us proud. Probably my least favourite away venue because of overzealous security, although I do love the city.’
‘It’s worth mentioning the aerial advantage was a constant threat.
We had no way to counter it as they simply towered over us.
One Newcastle cross into the box saw them win four consecutive headers. Fortunately, they didn’t come to anything but that’s a measure of how much they could dominate us in the air.’
‘Penalties. It’s a shame the money-grabbing Champions League teams denied us the chance at a replay we more than deserved but that’s modern football.
The penalties felt cruel given who they were sending up to take theirs compared to who we had to use.’
‘How on earth must Iraola feel when every talent that he has nurtured and improved walks out of the door. I wouldn’t blame him at all if he’s next out.’
‘Their height advantage reminded me of the Persian army attacking the 300 Spartans .
AFCB never give up, AFCB never surrender.
Give them nothing, but take from them everything.
And you know what , we almost pulled it off.
Chapeau to one, all.’
‘That really hurt.
Did anybody else think Barnes was offside for their 3rd goal?’
‘I know it’s not a fair league, but shoot-outs so favour the bigger clubs. Eddie had a much stronger bench which translated to better opportunities in the shoot-out. Even with that said, we had them on the ropes and just couldn’t put them away.
In terms of fairness, I’d suggest that a manager should be able to select from all players on his sheet on the day. We had Kroupi, Brooks and Scott subbed off. Get them back in, plus Tavs and we have a pretty good chance.’
‘Great effort from a patched up side with so many out at the moment.
Some of you who comment on these matchday threads need to take a long hard look at yourselves.
Embarrassing doesn’t even come close.’
‘A really, really good showing from ALL the players today. Never gave up though they were dead on their feet (as were the Newcastle players to be fair)
Penalties are a lottery so the result is no disgrace.
We had the chances to win the game with a number of one on ones with Rambo (but so did Newcastle)
A great game for the neutral but, in the end, not the result we, perhaps, deserved.’
