It ends Wolves 0 Newcastle 0 and we will need to rediscover our shooting boots…
Wolves 0 Newcastle 0 – Sunday 18 January 2026 2pm
A flat first half of no efforts on target by the visitors despite dominating possession.
We hit the post from a scramble at an inswinging corner but Sa in the Wolves goal had little to do.
Tonali again looked well below his all-action best, teammates were reluctant to shoot and 0-0 was a fair score at the interval. Our full-backs and wingers put in 17 crosses and Woltemade should have headed two into the net.
Little difference after the break.
Tonali was the first to be booked, on 57 minutes, and that summed up his afternoon. He did better two minutes later but his on-target shot, hit instantly, was blocked near the penalty spot.
Wolves responded briefly before an excellent cross gave Joelinton the chance to head us into the lead. Sadly, he didn’t take it.
On 67 minutes, Wissa, Miley and Elanga replaced Woltemade, Tonali and Gordon. None of the subbed players could complain.
The game seemed to be drifting to a stalemate despite the changes.
Hall and Bruno G did their best to drive Newcastle forward in the last quarter. From a corner on our right, we pinned in Wolves but a top Barnes cross found nobody gambling in the six-yard box.
The game belatedly opened up and Barnes won a free-kick with a forceful, direct run just after Wolves wasted a decent chance. From 30 yards, Trippier bent a shot inches wide of the near post with Sa beaten. Still no effort on target.
Strand Larsen, on as a sub, looked busy and the alleged Newcastle target certainly added some punch to the Wolves attack. He also gave away a free-kick for the umpteenth foul on Hall. From it, we forced two saves, first from Guimaraes, then from Joelinton.
Wissa saw little of the ball in his half-hour. When it did reach him, he did nothing with it.
Into six minutes of stoppage time and Hall’s refusal to shoot from distance led to a quick Wolves beak and a pair of corners. They were cleared and that seemed to be that.
In the final minute, after a few more scuffles, a sliced shot by our captain from a bouncing ball flew wide and we had to settle for a point.
Wolves are scrapping for their lives and for the second successive match we didn’t take the few chances we made.
The clean sheet was welcome but we will need to rediscover our shooting boots on Wednesday to ensure the Champions League campaign doesn’t fade and die.
