Burnley fans discussing Newcastle United and the 2-1 defeat.

An eventful match at St James’ Park.

Burnley fans watched on as their team went two goals and a man down in the first half.

Then a spirited defensive performance held off a Newcastle United side that failed to add any more goals after the break.

That topped off by an added time goal that meant a nearby few minutes at the end for home fans.

Burnley fans commenting via their Up The Clarets message board:

‘Enjoyed every minute in Newcastle, what a place.

Game over from silly goals and with 10 Men is was game over but If ever there is an example that this team if capable of staying in the league, this game was it.’

‘I think for the sending off incident Gordon is actually extremely clever. He shapes to do one thing with the ball and then plays a pass which nobody except Elanga was reading. I know live at the game it completely threw me and I immediately thought it was very astute. It totally wrong footed our defence’

‘There’s a real naivety in many of the comments on here. Newcastle were 2-0 playing against ten men and coasting. There’s have a game on Wednesday in Germany then their derby next weekend. They were clearly just managing the game.’

‘I watched a 93-year-old Burnley fan climbing a few rows to get to his seat yesterday at Newcastle.’

‘Broja was excellent and gave the Newcastle defenders a hard afternoon. A pity some of our support left at half time, a long way to travel for 45 minutes. I found it quite sad that so many left at half time. I was expecting the worst …’

‘We should have drawn that.’

‘Irrelevant, but I enjoyed seeing Toneli telling everyone to think/be sensible as he came on and then immediately giving away a soft/unnecessary foul on Walker.’

‘For the goals, the penalty was fair, it hit his middle / upper arm which was in an odd position.

The corner (stupidly conceded by Ekdal under no pressure) was expertly put in, and if leaning into the keeper is allowed, which it is, why have we had several outfield free kicks given against us for leaning in during recent games? Inconsistency, but correct.’

‘Newcastle is one of those grounds we never do well at. Turf Moor is another.’

‘Newcastle 2 – 0 Burnley brings back so many bad memories, still got issues relating to that scoreline.’

‘Don’t worry it won’t stay like that for long.’

‘We played really well for the first half an hour, we looked to have a go. We just can’t help ourselves though, we have to do something daft and self inflicted.’

‘Only a penalty on planet var – he misses the ball with both hands.’

‘I think you need to watch it back, how anyone can say he doesn’t handball that is beyond belief.’

‘I don’t know why people are blaming the referee like we’ve been conned. Talk about head in the sand and deflection.’

‘I’ve no problem with the penalty decision or the red card, but why didn’t Dubravka complain to the ref about Gordon backing into him for their first goal from the corner?’

‘Started off well and better than I’ve seen us in previous games. The fluke goal from the corner with the red card has thrown the game out of the window.’

‘Do people just come up with opinions based on the scoreline with 0 context. We did OK early on had plenty of corners, didn’t convert one and then with Newcastles first corner they put it straight in the net.

We then get a red card when it looked unlikely they were going to score and that’s game over. The handball is just salt in the wound.

How someone watches that and then says its the managers fault is beyond me’

‘Another defeat, but this was an enjoyable watch otherwise.’

‘That was proper nervy towards the end but we just managed to hang on to the defeat.’

‘Never gunna win here anyway – once of the places you’d never expect to.’

‘It’s a penalty but he definitely raises his arms to defend himself against voltemarde and the ball clips his arm

And I’ve watched the Dubravka/ Gordon thing back a few times, it’s a foul plain and simple. Gordon impedes him.’

‘Dubravka is bodied a bit, but his positioning and tracking of the ball were poor. He’s almost never the problem, but he made a mistake today. It happens.

The penalty has to be given. Unless we’re saying only deliberate handball constitute one.’

‘Our team, they might be lacking in quality but definitely not effort.’

‘I would say that today, there was plenty of quality too.’

Newcastle United Team Dressing Room Celebration

‘Regarding the could have, should have, if, if, if arguments.

My wife has a theory on this and think she is right, which is to always look at goal difference which by the end of the season comes close to approximating league position.

Our GD is only slightly behind Leeds, Forest and West Ham. So that suggests to me that we have to improve but not by a huge amount and have a chance.’

‘I’ve generally been supportive of Parker. However, other than the first 5 minutes and the last 5 minutes when we decided to give it a go, I’m genuinely struggling to see what others are taking as positives from that.’

‘Newcastle players throwing themself on floor equals automatic free kick.’

‘After the referee on Wednesday night we were back to one of the usual Premier League robots. Touch a Newcastle player (and even when not touched) they fall over…free kick. We get pushed, nudged and fall over it’s the arms out saying no time after time. They don’t like being tackled the majority of prem players. Always look for the foul no matter what. The game is a shell of what it used to be.’

‘Can someone kindly explain why Ramsey wasn’t sent off for the deliberate handball? Attwell said it was ‘denial of a promising attack’ over the tannoy. The shot is on target and has a chance of going in. Our ex-player Assignon did something similar vs Bayern yesterday and was sent off.’

‘Apparently had he not handled it then it would have been an easy save for Ramsdale so only a yellow card.’

‘I can’t definitely prove it, but I feel that to prevent Pires being able to win the ball from him, Elanga kicked the ball forward hard enough that Dubravka would have been favourite to get to the ball first. It is definitely a close call.’

‘I feel like we’ve played well today, especially in the second half with 10 men. It’s frustrating that we keep making silly mistakes, but we still need to score goals.’

‘Strikers got in each other’s way at the end with open goal Laurent misses his header!!’

‘If we played like this every week, and put the ball where we are doing from corners, we would be good enough.’
