Newcastle 2 Burnley 1 and match ratings and comments on all Newcastle United players

We asked Mark Jankowski to give us his match ratings and player comments after Newcastle 2 Burnley 1.

Ramsdale 6

In truth, he had very little to do, but never really looked that confident when the ball came into his box and flapped at a few crosses.

Livramento 6

A little bit of a shaky first half for Tino.

He looked a little unsettled with Burnley’s man for man approach and didn’t always make the best decision defensively.

He improved much in the second half and overall had a decent performance.

Thiaw 8

Week in week out Malick Thiaw has been our most consistent performer at the back.

He never looks rattled under pressure and makes excellent decisions time after time.

He’s hands down the best signing in the Premier League this season.

Schar 7

He didn’t have an awful lot to do today but one thing Fabian does bring to the team is an excellent range of passing.

He sprayed one or two delightful balls out wide in the second half.

Burn 7

Asked to deputise at left back today while Lewis Hall had a rest, Dan Burn had a decent enough performance.

He was much more careful in possession than in midweek and I don’t mind seeing the big man stand in for Lewis Hall every now and then when he needs a rest.

Willock 7

A decent if not spectacular performance from Joe Willock today.

Hwever, his ability to press out of possession and run effectively with the ball served us well or more than one occasion.

Ramsey 5

Ramsay drifted through the game for large periods of the match.

He probably would have come away with a rating of a six, if not for his daft handball in the dying moments that invited unwanted pressure.

Bruno 8

Bruno is a world-class midfielder and one of two genuinely world-class players Newcastle have in their squad, alongside Sandra Tonali.

He showed it to get again today with a true captain’s performance.

His goal direct from a corner has been coming for a few games after he got awfully close midweek against Tottenham.

Elanga 6

I could have maybe rated Elanga a little higher to be honest but I felt there were times in the game where he looked a little lost and ran straight into a defender.

That being said, he put in one or two excellent deliveries and was unlucky not to score at least one goal today.

Woltemade 6

Relatively quiet day for the big German. He did everything he was asked to very well, but in truth never really got a clear shot on goal. He’ll have better days in the black and white, but he always seems to contribute effectively in our build-up play.

Gordon 7

Plenty of good running today from Anthony Gordon and he took his penalty very well, not dissimilar to his effort in midweek.

It’s good to see him starting to recover a bit of form as we come into a tricky part of the season.

SUBS

Hall 6

Wasn’t overly involved in the game as Newcastle drifted through the second half.

But as always, he looks an assured presence at left back and his contributions will be much needed in the week ahead.

Miley 6

Following Hall and Miley’s introduction in the second half, Newcastle’s urgency did improve somewhat, and I felt that the young man had another decent showing at this level.

Wissa 6

Our new number 9 got a rousing reception when he stepped onto the pitch and looked keen to be involved whenever he could.

Unfortunately, he didn’t contribute an awful lot and wasted his one good opportunity by overhitting a cross to Elanga when he could have quite easily rolled it along the deck.

Joelinton 6

Not too much for Big Joe to do when he came on the pitch, but he covered the ground well, and found himself in a few good positions late in the second half.
