A few Newcastle United and Sunderland statistics you might not have heard mentioned…

I have kept hearing how this season is apparently a disaster for Newcastle United and some kind of unparalleled success for Sunderland.

Do the facts really add up, do they support this view?

Journalists so keen to push this ultra positive Sunderland view and at the same time go so over the top (in my opinion) on Newcastle United in a negative way.

I also find it very amusing how the Mackems are presented as penniless paupers ‘succeeding’ against all the odds.

Nobody is denying that Newcastle United have spent money since we finally got rid of Mike Ashley after a decade and a half of chronic lack of spending, on and off the pitch.

However, when do you ever hear mention that Sunderland spent £160m+ last summer, a figure far higher than any promoted club had ever spent previously, when promoted to the Premier League.

Anyway, I had a delve into what has happened so far in 2025/26.

A few Newcastle United and Sunderland statistics you might not have heard mentioned… (correct as of the morning of Saturday 17 January 2026):

Sunderland have won two Premier League games since October 2025.

In all matches this season, in all competitions, Newcastle have scored 56 goals, Sunderland have scored 23 (and even rock bottom Wolves have scored 29 goals in all competitions).

In all matches this season, in all competitions, Sunderland have won 8 matches, Newcastle have won 16.

Since August 2025, Sunderland have won 3 matches at home, Newcastle have won 13.

Sunderland fans have seen their team score 13 goals all season at the Stadium of Light, Newcastle United fans have seen their team score 39 goals at St James’ Park.

Wilson Isidor is Sunderland top scorer with 4 goals in all competitions this season, for Newcastle United the top scorer is Barnes (11) and then Woltemade (9), Bruno (8), Gordon (8), Joelinton (5)…

Sunderland lost at home to League One Huddersfield, Newcastle United hammered League One Bradford 4-1.

The last 12 weeks, Sunderland have won 3 matches, Newcastle have won 10.
