Reality check for Newcastle United fans

Whist all Newcastle United fans are feeling a little low today, as last night did not go to plan, it is worth reflecting on the reality of last night’s game and result.

Newcastle were playing against England’s best side over the last decade and we were going into the game feeling positive.

As opposed to five years ago we would have hoped not to be embarrassed against this level of opposition.

Although United were saved by VAR at one point, we still created chances, just failed to take them.

So long as you create chances, you will always have an opportunity to win games.

We looked a little off the pace, due partly to the number of minutes many players have needed to play at such a high level, due to injuries and the number of fronts we are fighting on.

Although Manchester City are in the same situation, they have had time to build their squad during times without the financial restrictions that exist today.

We will go into February still competing in four competitions, not a common situation in our history.

The Carabao Cup semi-final second leg leaves Newcastle United with a mountain to climb and whilst our hopes are slim, we know Eddie Howe will give it a go.

The schedule will not get any easier before the second leg, but those players who are struggling for fitness and form, have a little more time to get back to their best.

Even if it ends up as defeat in this two-legged Carabao Cup semi-final against Manchester City, we still have the FA Cup, Champions League, and Champions League qualification via the Premier League, to compete for.

This Newcastle United season is far from over.
