Crystal Palace fans comments before AND after 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United

Very interesting to see what Crystal Palace fans have said, both before AND after the 2-0 defeat their team suffered at St James’ Park.

This Newcastle United victory meant Eddie Howe’s side moved above Oliver Glasner’s team in the Premier League table.

Such a vital win as it followed up the 3-1 result at Burnley.

It also continued the very impressive home form since September, these last eleven games in all competitions at St James’ Park, have now brought nine wins, two draws and zero defeats.

Crystal Palace fans saw their team hammered 4-0 at St James’ Park in 2023/24 and then 5-0 last season.

Whilst Sunday’s result now means that the last six Palace visits have seen Eddie Howe’s side win five and draw one.

Indeed, it is five years since Crystal Palace last scored at St James’ Park, when they won 2-1 against an NUFC team ‘managed’ by Steve Bruce.

Crystal Palace fans commenting before AND after the 2-0 defeat by Newcastle United on their Holmesdale message board:

PRE-MATCH

‘The Johnson signing (along with Tonali and Elanga being rubbish at the moment) might tip it slightly in our favour.

I think a draw but would not be shocked if we nicked it.’

‘1 – 0 to us, BJ to score, hope he starts, but realistically sub coming on with 30 mins to go

Be hard game though.’

‘With the players we’ve got missing and the energy levels low at the moment, you just can’t see anything but a good hiding up there. BUT its a funny old game as greavsey used to say and with us being better away and Newcastle are not exactly indestructible we might pinch a point.

So I’ll go 1-1 with our newbie getting off the mark.

‘Any chance the game will be called off?’

‘Since all PL clubs are required to have undersoil heating I guess the chances of todays game being postponed are kind of slim.’

‘Newcastle blow hot and cold so seem to be giving the opponents a chance.’

‘It’ll be like the Leeds game, they’ll be very physical and energetic and have too much for us. Home win.’

‘I’d be happy with a 1 1 draw. ‘

‘It was a 5 -0 battering last season when we were whole and pretty good

We are now depleted and knackered and I fear the worst.

Any improvement on last season I’d take.’

‘We will probably lose….however if we can get Johnson running at a makeshift full back…we couldn’t could we?’

‘Newcastle paid a lot of money for that new guy up front – Woltenmade (excuse the spelling if its wrong)

Tall , Peter Crouch type – watched him in the U21 world cup, whilst of course he can score if he gets openings, but from what I saw spent lots of time complaining looking for free kicks / penalties.’

‘Trippier is a poor man’s Clyne.’

‘Not for me.

The best deliverer of the ball from the right back position in the country.’

‘Trippier’s delivery is usually right ‘On the money’ and he possesses a creditable record of providing assists.

He was a midfielder in the Man C academy and they converted him into a right-back.’

‘Anything better than last years 5-0 drubbing will be a top result! We very rarely turn up at St James’s Park and get our kits muddy!’

‘If we lose 4-0 or 5-1 you will excuse me if I don’t join in the celebrations.’

‘The way they play, they haven’t kept a clean sheet in the PL since mid-September (vs Wolves!). So, I think we should have opportunities to score – just hope they don’t get more.’

‘Newcastle always too strong physically so 3-1 best we can hope for.’

POST-MATCH

‘Got to say their corners was very hard to defend against, pace and curl.’

‘I think the problem is just simply we’re knackered and we don’t have any subs capable of having much of an impact.’

‘Can’t fault the effort – just lack of ball control. Even Guehi was misplacing his passes.

Our last 3 visits to Newcastle aggregate 0-11 – it’s a difficult place to play. Our goal difference has slumped from +9 to -1

Hats off to the intrepid Palace supporters – you deserve medals.’

‘In terms of Newcastle’s opening goal, Hughes is marking Miley in front of him in a central position before the free kick is taken. When the ball is headed out to a Newcastle player, Hughes remains central,Miley moves away to the right anticipating a cross.Hughes points his hand in the direction of Miley alerting his teammates but alas the Newcastle gets to the ball with Johnson in close attendance and delivers it into the middle for Guimaraes to head home.’

‘I thought we managed Newcastle well for most of the game . They never looked like scoring in open play. We also created chances ourselves and Glasner changes tactics to give our midfield 2 extra support.’

‘A reality check-in now and again never hurt anyone. NUFC fans will confirm that after, like us, last season delivered silverware never seen by most (if not all) fans inside the Newcastle Arena watching today.

Anyone associated with CPFC will remember we are CURRENTLY enjoying the most favourable period for over 50 years.

My advice is to pour yourself a drink, keep the glass half full knowing that today is still one of those days over Christmas when you have to scratch your head to remember what day of the week is.

Finally let’s all keep our recent successes never far from our thoughts either!

Edward Howe just said “Take nothing away from today’s victory, especially with Palace being such a quality quality side” and his comments then being echoed by our own head coach saying “it was a good performance today, just without a result”

The words of these two managers are the ones that count after all.’

‘Criticism of Henderson is very misplaced, he is after all England’s No.2.’

‘Agree he is a good goalie, but he is not beyond criticism. At set pieces he’s frozen to his line and when he does need to claim he panics – the 2nd goal he could have caught at chest height. Instead he merely punched it into a melee of players.’

‘All my thoughts on Pino had been confirmed at Newcastle, the guy is rubbish.

Johnson was poor outside of one action.

I’m sorry to say it but Glasner will undoubtely flop if he goes to a big club due to his complete tactical inflexibility and his childish behaviour when things arent going his way. Whenever something is awry its never him its always an excuse.’

‘You’ve never seen other managers moan yet get top jobs? There are bigger whiners than Ollie. What was Mourinho’s nickname again? Excuses are part and parcel of football management. I suspect it’s mainly to do with overpaid players and inflated egos.’

‘Those with this level of tactical inflexibility crash and burn perfect case in point Ruben Amorim.’

‘One thing I’ll say is Glasner does change things during games. Particularly when it’s not going well. Fair enough, largely the same formation – although he’ll throw more up top of we’re chasing a game.

He changes things like the positioning, runs, marking and passing style. We go wide and change to narrower quite often. We started wide against Newcastle and gradually got more compact. It didn’t work but I also thought our forward and our back line needed to get closer to each other.’

‘Of the 23 goals we have conceded in the league this season 12 have come from set pieces i.e more than 50%.

We have to stop the rot on this if results are to improve.’

‘I’m surprised by so much negativity, although I understand it on the back of a defeat.

The game was reasonably even, but they took their chances, we didn’t make the most out of ours.’

‘Jason Tindall.

I know someone who is a good friend of his. Courtesy of Jason I have been treated to hospitality at ‘Dean Court’, ‘Bubbles’ champagne bar and complimentary tickets !’

‘Our own Steve Lovell. He is also the half brother of Edward H.

Let’s not forget Edward Howe was also the first manager to sacrifice his wages during the pandemic which led to an array of other commanders following.

My hat was tipped then and remains tipped now. Such a lovely gesture.’

‘An even game until Newcastle brought on Barnes , Livramento and another bloke . Gave them a spark and they took over the game at a time we were tiring . We just had no answer to that .

Todays game is about 15/16 premier league players we have 11/12 at best and even then trying to put square pegs in round holes .’

‘Newcastle scored after the 70th minute and brought on quality subs. As normal our substitutions were late. Yes, we would probably still have lost if they came on at same time as Newcastle’s but that was the only way we could have got a result in our favour. Our team was too knackered yet again and mistakes / tiredness took over to lose us the match. Poor decisions by Glasner again in my opinion?’

‘Nick Pope used to be a milkman so has been used to sub-zero temperatures.’

‘To single out Wharton as lightweight is ridiculous.

Newcastle outmuscled us pretty much all over the pitch .’

‘Too many mistakes throughout the team, especially in the second half. We were lucky to only lose by 2.’

‘Henderson had a good game. Could have been many more goals conceded by a less heroic keeper.’

‘They had some quality on the bench. Our bench cannot change a game.’

‘Pope must have been frozen solid for lack of work.’

‘We have been heavily linked in the past with wilock. That miss is exactly what we need in our squad… quick sign him up.’
