Having won against Spurs in a comeback victory on Wednesday, Andoni Iraola had hopes of following up with an FA Cup victory at St James’ Park.

Those hopes very much raised when Bournemouth bounced back from Harvey Barnes opening the scoring on 50 minutes.

Andoni Iraola seeing his team bounce back with two goals six minutes apart, having to see out the final 22 minutes, plus added time…

Anthony Gordon breaking the visitors’ hearts when making it 2-2 five minutes into added time.

Newcastle United then scoring late in extra time and Bournemouth even later, to force penalties, which Eddie Howe’s side ended up winning 7-6 after nine penalties each.

Andoni Iraola reflecting: “”Even in the shootout we were for a moment in front but it was not meant to be…”

Summing up the whole occasion and the competition overall, the Cherries boss saying: “This is the FA Cup. I’m very proud of being part of this game because, it is true we are out of the competition, but I don’t think we can ask much more of the players. I think we gave everything.”

With a penalty shootout it is who holds their nerve the best and Andoni Iraola stating: “The team that finished the game, we probably didn’t have a lot of penalty specialists. After the first two or three penalties, it was a matter of choosing between players that have probably never taken a penalty, or very few times. You never know how they will react.”
