Nick Woltemade talks to German media about how difficult a decision to sign for Newcastle United
Nick Woltemade signed for Newcastle United three months ago. United agreeing to meet Stuttgart’s valuation, unlike Bayern Munich, who had tried to get the exciting young striker on the cheap. Newcastle United paying a guaranteed £65m, plus around £4m in potential future add-ons.
So how difficult a decision was it for the then Stuttgart striker? The now Newcastle United star giving his answer to German media.
Nick Woltemade talking to Stern – 4 December 2025:
“I had two days to reflect [on whether to sign for Newcastle United, or not…] but I didn’t have to think long anyway.
“Because Newcastle United are a great club, playing in the strongest league in the world.
“My goal has always been to compete with the best.”
Nick Woltemade has fitted in so well at Newcastle United, as has his fellow international teammate Malick Thiaw.
Woltemade talked after last weekend’s win at Everton about (see below) how easy the transition was when moving to Tyneside and settling in at Newcastle United.
At the Hill Dickinson Stadium, Nick Woltemade scored a brilliant lob, as United won 4-1 away to Everton, his seventh goal of the season for Newcastle United.
Against Spurs on Tuesday, Big Nick didn’t score but got an assist for the Bruno goal.
In total this season for club and country, Nick Woltemade has started 21 matches and had 13 direct goal involvements, scoring 11 goals and getting two assists.
The Germany international when earlier asked how he has found it adapting to the Premier League after the Everton 1 Newcastle 4 match on 29 November 2025:
“Really easy transition.
“The guys welcomed us (Nick Woltemade and fellow Germany international Malick Thiaw) really well.
“The fans make it feel like home already.
“It is a nice feeling for us.
“I think I can improve my game but I have scored goals, which is the most important things for a striker.
“To get a good feeling at a new club, especially in a new league, I am really happy about it.”
A typically modest Nick Woltemade on his latest classy goal, lobbing Jordan Pickford:
“It was a good counter attack.
“Anthony [Elanga] played a good ball to me.
“I was a bit lucky that it went in.”
My thoughts
Nick Woltemade has been exceptional, especially considering the bitter nonsense he had to put up with as well from senior figures at Bayern Munich, which the media in Germany were more than happy to make headlines with, then the media in the UK slavishly repeating it.
What a signing he has proved for the ‘idiots’ at Newcastle United!
Not only the seven goals (eleven for club and country) he has scored, Nick Woltemade is such an unselfish player as well, plus a great character off the pitch.
