BBC Sport comments from ‘neutrals’ on Newcastle United after 2-1 win vs Fulham

Interesting to read through these BBC Sport comments, following on from Newcastle United winning 2-1 against Fulham in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

The comments from neutrals especially telling…

A lot of it different to what Newcastle United fans had come to expect from the BBC Sport ‘neutrals’.

The BBC Sport comments from neutrals in the past had been overwhelmingly a catalogue of abuse aimed at NUFC supporters.

Particularly stuff about the Newcastle United owners and the media-inspired pile-ons that NUFC fans have become used to, when blamed for who now owns their club.

On this occasion the politics entirely absent, concentrating instead on matters on the pitch…

The BBC Sport readers comments from neutrals, some Fulham fans, plus the odd Newcastle supporter also contributing:

‘Well done Newcastle, but as a neutral, there’s nothing more disappointing than an injury time winner when penalties are looming’

‘Despite the best efforts of the referee, Newcastle deservedly take the win.

Credit to Fulham who pressed us a lot more than I thought they could but delighted for the team and Miley in particular – great to see a local lad doing so well in our team.’

‘I just hope this United can go on and retain this cup.

2 cups in 2 seasons would go down well you feel up there in the North East, they’d be in cuckoo land after years and years of nowt.’

‘With a 2 legged semi against Citeh it looks like bye bye Newkie!’

‘Oh you came after all!

Is your mind blown that Newcastle inconceivably beat Fulham?’

‘The defending champions defending their trophy gallantly!

Have got to win it for the second time in a row.

Now, that will write some piece of history.’

‘A great match for the neutral. Well done Toon.’

‘Totally different team when tonalli come on or plays. Still seems to be something missing though. Well done wissa and congratulations again lewy Miley. You’re going to be a Star of the future.’

‘Every team in the semi-finals (bar Palace, I suppose, if they make it) is still in with a shot at the Quadruple.

Newcastle might look the unlikeliest right now, but we are still EXACTLY where we were exactly one season ago, for all the wailing and gnashing of teeth!!!’

‘Wissa back. We know what he’s capable of.

‎This is a huge boost for Newcastle as they bid to get their season back on the desired track.’

‘Mags look a strong team at home’

‘Man c will be very hard to beat though could have been SAFC vs Newcastle as well we went out to Huddersfield then Man C played them and beat them.’

‘I said it before that having Iwobi, Bassey and Chukwueze all leave at once for AFCON will be overly expensive for Fulham.’

‘I wish the trio was allowed to play this match before departing, when if it meant seeking special approval from the Nigerian FA.

This was the only realistic or half-realistic chance of silverware for Fulham this season. More efforts were desired imo.’

‘Sunderland are the most hit among all PL sides. Losing six players at once to AFCON isn’t funny at all.’

‘It’s fine, according to their fans Sunderland are the best team in the world. They could play with just 5 men and still beat literally anyone in their Champions League games. Oh wait..’

‘Hays travel have a very dusty cupboard full of files of European football destinations. It needs a good clean and review, lots of teams like Dynamo Lokomotive on file.’

‘Last two were Vasas in Budapest and Sporting Lisbon in 73/4. Lisbon knocked them out but the Mackems thought it was such a rarity they took the name of their stadium when they left Joker Park. Reminds them of being in Europe all those 52 years ago’

‘Joke refereeing at times tonight.’

‘Young Miley gets a lot of praise and rightly so, but the work rate of Bruno all over the pitch is unbelievable.’

‘Tonali’s energy and all round game made a huge difference when he came on. Jacob Murphy played some excellent crosses in during the first half. Well done Miley, first shot was well saved, but it’s always great for any team when a local lad gets the winner. ‘

Aabsolutely shocking decision making from Silva again … i CANNOT be the only fan that thinks he should drop Jiminez. Does nothing the whole game, onlt to give the J. Kusi-Asare 1min of the entire game …..Jiminez NEEDS to be dropped, yet he starts game after game….CANNOT and WILL NOT produce anything !!’

‘Newcastle through to ANOTHER Carabao Cup semi final.

It’s becoming as inevitable as Liverpool trolls still bitter from the last final infesting our comments!’

‘Thoroughly deserved by Newcastle Utd.

Fulham offered very little.’

‘Newcastle were poor. At times Fulham looked much better but they seemed to run out of steam. There wasn’t much in it.’

‘What game were you watching lol. Newcastle were the better team and the only team in the second half that actually wanted to win the game and not take the game to penalties’
