Instant Newcastle United fan/writer reaction to Newcastle winning 7-6 on penalties following 3-3 AET
Newcastle 3 Bournemouth 3 AET and NUFC win 7-6 on penalties – Saturday 10 January 2026 3pm
Newcastle United fan/writer reaction from some of our regular contributors on The Mag.
Matt Busby said to Joe Harvey…:
‘Where to start?
Six goals, could have been another 4-3 if Gordon had converted right at the death and the drama of a penalty shootout with big Aaron Ramsdale the unlikely hero with three massive saves.
We wanted to win. I thought Bournemouth wanted penalties. That was the difference.
Is the expended energy going to be worth it considering what’s coming? You bet!’
GToon:
‘Always great to win but at what cost with regard to Tuesday and fixture pile up.
Back in 93 or whatever when we were chasing promotion under KK The Mag had a front cover exclaiming promotion was secured at 4:43 when Roy Wegerle scored the F A cup 3rd round winner at Ewood Park.
I wouldn’t have been too bothered if we had not won today due to the physical cost of the extra games but then again momentum and belief might be more important.
Howay the lads! Happy days!
Respect to Chris Sutton and his prediction….’
David Punton:
‘High drama! Another one!
The highs and lows of football explored all in a crazy 120 mins and then the lottery of the penalty shoot out.
Huge credit for the lads coming through such a game.
Can I just say though, to be 3-2 up so late in extra time to then concede that Bournemouth equaliser was, frankly, criminal.
What also rankled was ging 1-0 and then just dropping off a cliff and allowing them a way back.
They’re conceding far too many goals.
Having won the last two games is nothing short of incredible given how many we have shipped.
All that said, Ramsdale atoned for his error with the save that sent us into round four, and we have to hope for a good draw after all that farrago.
That’s also 120 mins in the legs ahead of the League Cup tie. Not ideal.
A win, but much for Eddie Howe and the players to work on.
Final word for Harvey Barnes. The kid’s a goal machine.’
Billy Miller:
‘When we got to half time at 0-0 I thought we were going to have a much less dramatic affair this afternoon.
Think again.
Topsy turvy second half and extra time with Harvey Barnes bagging another brace and thinking he’d won it late again, only for us to gift them an even later equaliser.
The penalties felt like they went on forever and I was bracing myself for the keeper’s turns but Ramsdale completed a hat-trick of saves to ensure we progressed to the next round.
We must have played close to 6 hours of football in the last 6 days and have Man City next!’
Simon Ritter:
‘Nearly everything that could have gone wrong did go wrong after Eddie Howe made seven changes, leaving only Thiaw, Tonali, Woltemade and Barnes from the epic win on Wednesday night.
Having taken the lead through Barnes after a great pass by Big Nick, Newcastle conceded two in seven minutes.
No coincidence that Livramento had been forced off by another injury just before Bournemouth equalised. Gordon was at his nerveless best to score from the spot in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
By then, Tuesday’s League Cup opponents had won 10-1. Let’s hope they hit a dry spell, though the absence of a Haaland goal is a worry.
Hall, Miley, Gordon, Joelinton and Guimaraes would have wanted a day off but they all had to play a minimum of 45 minutes as Howe shuffled the starting line-up in the second half.
Barnes looked to have scored another late, late winner in the 118th minute, only for our central defenders to be embarrassed again with the last kick of extra time.
Step forward Aaron Ramsdale, who saved three penalties in the shootout to help us win a nailbiter 7-6. An unlikely hero in another unforgettable match.’
Nat Seaton:
‘Hard to put into words this match!
I really thought we had it won with Barnes’ header but some poor defending let them back in and on to the dreaded penalties..
Thankfully some amazing Ramsdale saves and some cracking penalties from the players who weren’t even in the top 5 got another win in the bag.
It’s not what we needed going into to a cup semi final in 3 days but I’m sure the players and manager would prefer to have played extra time and penalties and won than losing, I know I do!’
Tony Mallabar:
‘Well, after the slightest of sprains on Wednesday. woke up on Thursday to me ankle swelling up and by Friday night my ticket was on the resale site.
So for the second time this season I was part of Eddie Howe’s firestick mags.
Funny how you view the game on tv as opposed to being in the ground watching it live. It’s definitely more intense experience for live than rather on the telly.
Rubbish first half with both Willock and Ramsey looking miles off it.
Second half after going 2-1 Bournemouth looking the better team although apart from getting skinned for their second goal, Botman looking something like back to his best.
Extra time how we made it to FT not winning after Bournemouth missed three sitters, then onto pens where it was written in the stars Ramsdale would save the day, after being exceptionally ordinary in the 120mins..
Play like that on Tuesday and there should be plenty of spare seats going down to Manchester on the ugly bus.’
Davey Hat-Trick:
‘Another crazy Keeganesque game at SJP and another narrow victory.
I thought we were the better side but we could easily have lost the game.
The subs improved things but there were enough erratic displays to give Eddie sleepless nights. He’ll probably have them anyway after Tino picked up another injury.
But we staggered through to the next round, where I’m hoping for a home tie against lower- league opposition. So put your money on Arsenal away….’
