The former top referee has now given his call on these incidents in the Burnley v Newcastle United match.
Dermot Gallagher looking at what happened during key moments in this match at Turf Moor.
United going on to win 3-1.
So what about these ‘controversial’ incidents…
Dermot Gallagher talking to Sky Sports about these Burnley v Newcastle United controversial incidents:
INCIDENT:
Burnley wanted Joelinton sent off, but the referee giving only a free-kick and no second yellow card, when he fouled Armando Broja during a Burnley break.
DERMOT GALLAGHER:
“Definitely not a [second yellow and a] red card, a foul on the halfway line has different consequences than a foul further up the field because of the ramifications.
“That foul has stopped Broja getting the ball, but he is running into traffic, he does not have green space ahead of him, but further up the field, it is a totally different decision, there are too many variables.”
INCIDENT:
Burnley wanted Yoane Wissa’s goal to be been ruled out for a Bruno Guimaraes challenge on Josh Laurent, as the ball fell loose in the six yard box and the Burnley defender trying to block Bruno getting to the loose ball.
DERMOT GALLAGHER:
“If that’s going to be given as a foul, it has to be the referee’s choice.
“The first thing he will say to the VAR is ‘I don’t think there’s enough there, I think Guimaraes is standing his ground if you like, the player has gone over too easily’.
“That will be his call. “
Especially after the catalogue of shocking decisions not going Newcastle’s way against Chelsea and Man U, it was about time Eddie Howe’s side got a favourable decision (or two).
The Joelinton one was never going to be a red card and the Wissa goal incident, it is one where the defending team hopes they will get a bit of a soft decision.
Thankfully the referee standing firm.
The thing was anyway, on the night this referee allowed a lot of physical stuff go for both sides, a number of challenges that might usually have seen the game stopped, instead allowed to flow.
