BBC Sport comments from ‘neutrals’ on Newcastle United after 2-0 win over Crystal Palace

Interesting to read through these BBC Sport comments, following on from Newcastle United winning 2-0 against Crystal Palace.

The comments from neutrals especially telling…

A lot of it different to what Newcastle United fans had come to expect from the BBC Sport ‘neutrals’.

The BBC Sport comments from neutrals in the past had been overwhelmingly a catalogue of abuse aimed at NUFC supporters.

Particularly stuff about the Newcastle United owners and the media-inspired pile-ons that NUFC fans have become used to, when blamed for who now owns their club.

On this occasion the politics (almost) entirely absent, concentrating instead on the actual football, as well as Eddie Howe and other topics of conversation.

The BBC Sport readers comments from neutrals, some Crystal Palace fans, plus the odd Newcastle supporter also contributing (as well as Sunderland fans pretending to be NUFC fans…):

‘Well done lads. 3 more points in the bag. Now lets have a laugh from the “sack Eddie” clowns. No Newcastle fan wants him to go.’

‘You will be just like all of them when you lose the next game.’

‘Aye, trolls and the internet brigade only HWTL’

‘Miley – playing with maturity beyond his years. The sky’s the limit for him.’

‘Playing out of position. 100% pass accuracy. Taking some corners. Got an assist. This kid can do anything.’

‘Another player bulled up like Isak.’

‘Liverpool thought he was worth £130m’

‘This win has not changed anything. if Newcastle are not in the top five at the end of the season Howe is out the door.’

‘Not really. However, as soon as a medium sized ( bigger club) club come in for Le Bris, he will be off faster than Usain Bolt.’

‘Good job Newcastle United only 2 points off the top 5 now, then!’

‘Most of last season they (Newcastle fan) wanted rid of Howe.’

‘Wrong. All the Sunderland fans pretending to be Newcastle fans want him out. 100% of all Newcastle real fans love him. Why wouldn’t we ? The most successful manager in over 50 years. And yet, there is your lot : 52 years without a domestic trophy. The least successful NE club in the last 50 years. Behind Middlesbrough and Newcastle.’

‘Haha that’s rich from mackems who when his club never won last 7 of their championship games prior to play off were on Radio Newcastle calling for their managers head yes the same manager who is now doing very well!!’

‘Boil in the bag brains eh, about as clued up as a bag of Malteasers.’

‘To think all the time and effort trying to get Guehi, so glad that didn’t happen and we got Thiaw instead, he’s been immense for us and can score at the right end of the pitch too… any idiots still calling for EH to be sacked?’

‘Nowt against Guehi as an individual but I do struggle to understand what all the fuss is about… he’s alright and he’s got a composure about him but is he a stand-out player regularly? not in my opinion’

‘Guehi wants to go to a club that regularly wins trophies, not a club that wins a league cup every 70 years or so.’

‘You were never getting Guehi, don’t fool yourself. But, stick with Eddie you might get another League Cup..’

‘It’s not that long ago Sunderland finished 7th a couple of years in a row, and they’ve still won more league titles than NUFC.’

‘Not long ago???? you’ve been out the prem 10 years lol.’

’27yrs. So 2 generations ago. But recent. Recent is pottering around league 1 for a few years.’

‘Newcastle deserved the win , barnes was the difference when he came on . Great cross for miley to knock back for Bruno to head in the first one.’

‘The Wissa offside, and many others like it, frustrate me.

How can a player be gaining an advantage if his shoulder is fractionally in front of the defender but his feet are half a yard behind the defender?

Time for a law change I think.

If your feet are behind the defender’s feet then you’re onside.’

VAR Screen Decision No Goal Wissa Newcastle Crystal Palace

‘(Palace fan) Oh dear, can you do better, OR, do you even know how to? You won, get over it.’

‘I can’t argue with that.

So much time is spent looking at infinitesimally small margins, when they could just implement a “daylight” rule, or something akin to “clear and obvious” where if it looks level it’s deemed level unless it’s clearly and obviously offside.

There’s no advantage in your toenail being 1mm ahead of the defender’s heel.’

‘That’s three games on the trot that poor decisions have gone against Gordon. I’d say his reputation precedes him now with refs.’

‘Correct! But, what a magnificent reputation.’

‘Sunderland and Newcastle both in the top half of the table.

Good days for the North East clubs.’

‘Really pleased for a little club like Sunderland to be doing so well.’

‘Newcastle will be about 10 points behind Sunderland. Despite your billions.’

‘Tell me what was the amount and the date we spent these billions.’

‘Still talking nonsense about money that we’re not allowed to spend.’

‘To think some Newcastle fans keep calling for Eddie Howe to leave. Have you guys got the memory of a goldfish? Who else will you get that’s any better?’

‘You’ll find that was mainly the lot down the road or social media types who have never been to a game in their lives, not true fans.’

‘The press and Facebook/ X big gobs keep saying we’re calling for him to leave. He’s not immune from criticism but I honestly don’t know a single Newcastle fan who wants him gone.’

‘Most comments on the internet which stir the pot are from rival fans pretending to be Newcastle fans. It’s the same for all clubs. Actual real fans who go to the matches are generally far more positive than the trolls and the tourist fans you see online. And that applies to all clubs.’

‘Inaccuracies from both sides at times but we deserved the win. Young Miley is some player.’
